Basic Rules

The dealer starts with 13 cards, everyone else gets 12 cards. When it’s your turn, you draw a card. If you can, form new melds or add to existing ones (sapaw), and then discard the cards to pass the turn.

Rounds end when someone declares Tongits (hand is empty), if a player calls a Draw to challenge everyone’s points, of if the deck runs out of cards.

Points are counted from leftover (unplayed) cards: Aces are worth 1, face cards – 10, and all others – their face value. The lowest total score wins.

Variations of Tongits Rules

Tongits has a lot of local variations and rules. They can even differ from barangay to barangay. Pusoy Penalty (too high points = bigger loss) is common with older players who also play Pusoy. Sometimes you can also see Jokers as wild cards, but these days it is not very common.

Mindanao (Davao, Zamboanga)

Many families and barangays create hybrid rules blending Pusoy, and sometimes wildcards. Higher penalties for burns are also common, especially in tournaments with high stakes.
